    I have an unpaid parking ticket in my in-tray, so yet again I am including design work from outside of our little corner of the globe, because I just simply love it.  

    The box is designed to contain a weeks worth of wine in individual half litre boxes.  You can send them to friends to either celebrate an event or get over a bad one!  You simply file in the blanks.

    I love this concept, just not sure about the boxes of wine!

    Building communities: a new way to engage with wine

    Unlike most beverages, wine is about community. Grape growers, winemakers, cellar hands, pruners, cellar door managers; they live in communities, share their stories, experiences and of course, their wines.

    It is this sense of community that traditional wine retailers don’t embody.  Vinology is a new wine shop that plans on disrupting the traditional wine retail model by building on this wine community.

    Andevine


    Designed by _Co PartnershipAustralia.

    Andevine is a boutique wine brand designed by Sydney based agency _Co Partnership.  I was recently lucky enough to be asked to judge the AABW Wine Design Award and this was one of the many entered.  

    Created for Australian Hunter Valley winemaker Andrew Leembruggen’s first ever release, the design reflects Andrew’s two biggest influences, his Dutch ancestry and his Australian upbringing.

    “We illustrated this story with the national flowers of Holland, Australia and New South Wales, intertwining with the letter A to create a memorable icon in the style of the Dutch oil masters. The brand is given further meaning with the name Andevine, a fusion of the winemakers first name and the very beginnings of the story, the grape vine.”

    One of Australia’s lead­ing som­meliers and Wine Dir­ector at Vue De Monde and his wife have embarked on the estab­lish­ment of a new winery in Beech­worth, Vic­toria. Maud was approached to develop their brand and inaug­ural label design and recently went on an excur­sion to the view the prop­erty and sample the goods.

    Two of my personal favorite labels around are entered into the AABW Australian Wine Design Awards.  And guess what?  You can buy these at www.vinology.com.au

    Materie is a stimulating Winecocktail which contains elderflower, Riesling grapes and mate. We made some icons of these ingredients and used them for our designs. The coasters and the packaging paper will change from time to time and so the bottles could become collectors items.

    AUSTRALIAN WINE INDUSTRY DESIGN COMPETITION….ENTRIES ARE ROLLING IN…

    There is no denying that working within the wine industry in no easy task.  At the constant mercy of mother nature and the battle for shelf space or cellar door visitors.  Creating brand awareness is crucial, and standing out on the wine store shelf is paramount.  The wine label has now become as important as the wine itself.  

    The Association of Australian Boutique Winemakers founded the Australian Wine Industry Design Competition in 1997.  Submissions come from both industry giants and the small independent artisan winemakers. At the 2012 trophy presentation Chairman Lisa McGuigan said “…. the competition between the boutique and commercial brands was very strong.  Well Done Australia”.

    “The competition is devoted exclusively to label design and its compatibility with the chosen bottle. Be it inexpensive and minimalist, the label can be just as powerful as the pricey model if it packs a punch and sends the right message to the consumer.” CEO Judith Kennedy

    The Competition has 14 different categories.  If you are a designer and think you have created Australia’s best label then enter at boutiquewines.com.au  before April 5th.

    “Schwarz Wine Company is a boutique winery based in Bethany, Barossa Valley. Winemaker Jason Schwarz appointed Sage to create a brand to help sell a small quantity of Cabernet Shiraz he had specially aged from his 2006 harvest. CS06 was the memorable name he conceived. Our brief was to develop a cost effective label that would stand out from the crowd and attract consumers aged 18-35yrs. Our eye-catching solution is inspired by stenciled type that appears on wine barrels to indicate the toasting level and vintage. This is an idea that can be applied to market small quantities Schwarz produces in the future.”

    Gippsland Wine Company labels that tell a tale


    “GWC apporached Picturelab to design a series of wine labels and relised that a strong brand is what the company needed. So with a slight alteration to the creative brief, a brand and labels were developed concurrently. The result is a seamless suite of branded items that help the small company punch about its weight in terms of brand awareness. The label approach was to tell the story of the estate through each varietal. From the colony of Black Cockatoos for the Shiraz, through to the Pinot Rosé label with red roses that lined the main building planted there by the first owner.”

    Pandora’s Amphora

    Pandora’s Amphora uses hand picked Vermentino, Fiano Moscato, Giallo. Naturally fermented in a single amphora.  Brought to you by the winemakers at Ducks in a Row, McLaren Vale.

    This beautiful work has been designed by Jeremy DV Boyd.

    According to Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman created – a gift to the first man. The legend of ‘Pandora’s Box’ is widely known, though maybe not so widely know is that the ‘box’ was actually a wine amphora. When Pandora opened the amphora, gifted to her by Zeus, all the evils of the world escaped. All that remained inside was, Hope.

    A brand mark was developed for Pandora’s Amphora consisting of a monogram combining the overlapping letters P and A in the form of a jug-like vessel. Hand-crafted custom typography accompanies the monogram, the forms of both inspired by a mysterious makers mark found pressed into the clay underneath the peeling paint of the ancient amphora used to ferment the wine. The brand name is cradled by a simplified rendition of the hand-painted floral fresco found on the clay amphora, hand painted using a digital Wacom tablet in place of the traditional brushes of the original artisan.

    The bottle has been sealed with a custom-coloured and double hand-dipped wax, holding in place a printed satin ribbon which acts as an opening device. The ribbon is exposed at one end, the wax concealing all but the start of a printed sentence, enticing the viewer to tear open to read on and discover more of the legend contained within.

    Knee Deep is an award-winning winery and restaurant based in Wilyabrup, Margaret River, Western Australia. We were commissioned by the owners, Phil and Sue Childs, to help them improve their packaging and strengthen their positioning in the marketplace.

    Designed by Inhouse, the design for Expatrius employs bold contemporary typography partnered with a flourish of old world embellishment in the form of a heraldic crown. The crown is drawn from elements borrowed from both the owners family crests, it is foiled and embossed to accentuate premium cues.

    Grown on the private Expatrius Estate at the eastern end of Waiheke Island in New Zealand, Expatrius wines are produced in very limited quantities
